DAY FOUR - LANDSCAPES

Not a productive day generally but it does fill me with a sort of optimism. The assignment that I was supposed to undertake was to start a several session follow-along landscape. A good part of the day was spent rebelling against that and I even tried starting an original figurative work. Eventually though I decided that instead I would return to my unfinished Salome and follow along as best I can with the landscape exercise doing a thorough background on Salome. I may, afterwards, if this is a useful exercise, do the same thing with Cascina.

The blue of the sky is mixed on the palette and applied whereas before I just squeezed a blue out of a tube and threw white in with it. This new blue has hints of pink and cream in it. Likewise, the clouds are shaded with a quite colourful grey (though a bit muddy). Currently the clouds appear artificial but I think I'm okay with that. The painting is not about realism as much as it is about renaissance stylings.

Originally, the sky darkened toward the earth. Now it is darker at the top and lightens as it approaches the horizon.

After doing the sky, with clouds, and distant mountains, I was instructed to stop and let things dry for a day so I'll continue tomorrow.
