1200 points of Gauls vs. 800 Points of Romans. It
was not a fair fight. Rome proposed a terrain set up
and Gaul negotiated until something was acceptable
to both. It turns out that this was a mistake on the
part of the Romans.
Deployment of the Gauls. The Gallic army deploys
with their Lowland allies (heavy foot) and noble
infantry in two lines behind fieldworks. The Medium
foot deploy on the flanks preparing to move through
the forests. One cavalry unit goes wide right while
3 units and light chariots cover the left flank.
*************
The Romans deploy with 4 cavalry units on their
right, 4 groups of veteran legionaires in the
center, and their auxilaries and slingers covering
the left. 24 stands of med/hvy Roman foot vs. 78
stands for the Gauls.
**************
Problems on the Roman left become apparent. The
slingers, having to split their fire between two
groups, cannot hope to have any effect. Gallic
slingers begin to have decisive effects upon the
central Roman slingers.
**********************
The Roman center advances steadily with the cavalry
keeping pace with the infantry. The Gauls wait
behind their fortifications
**************************
Due to some wretched luck, the Roman left collapses
alarmingly quickly. Pursuing evading slingers, the
Gauls slammed into the flank of the auxilaries and
broke them almost instantly. Their pursuit brought
them into the flanks of the others who were facing a
large unit of Gallic cavalry.
****************************
The Roman infantry close in on the Gallic fortified
positions. They begin to break up their formation as
they drive back Gallic skirmishers.
******************************
The Gauls send forward their light chariots in an
effort to slow down the Roman cavalry but also to
try to get it to commit and advance forward ahead of
the infantry. As the warbands move to the edge of
the woods, the Romans have one cavalry group pull
back to try to pin them without committing.
*********************************
This overview shows how already the Gauls have used
the forests to dominate both flanks and they are
beginning to fold in on their enemies. The Roman
center will press forward though.
***********************************
Three good Roman cavalry units hit a line of Gallic
light chariots. Everyone would be surprised to see
those chariots last for hours. They only would
eventually break (not even ever disrupting) when
they had lost 4 of their 6 bases. The durability of
these chariots would frustrate the Latins.
***********************************
On the Gallic left, free of any opposing formed
infantry, they turn themselves to face inward to
intend flanking the advancing main Roman battle
line.
*************************************
Problems begin to become apparent on the Roman
right. The warband charged out of the forest and
without a decisive result, the Roman cavalry broke
off, thereby further shrinking the perimeter. When
the chariots finally broke, the resulting pursuit
brought the Romans into the intended Gallic trap.
Gallic cavalry line up to flank the dangerously
advanced Roman horse. Their attack would have
devastating results.
**************************************
Problems begin to become apparent in the Roman
center. The legionaire battle line refuses its left
in the face of massive numbers of angry barbarians.
The Gauls in the bottom left of the picture are
elite noble infantry that have maneuvered over the
course of the day from the rear rank to plug a gap
in the front.
**************************************
A very blurry shot showing the climax of the battle.
The barbarians have charged across their
fortifications and 22 bases have slammed into the
leftmost 4 bases of the Roman battle line in the
open. At the other fortifications, Romans are
grinding down the Barbarians who hold together for
quite some time, even though fragmented. The Noble
infantry though are causing serious pain to their
opponents.
****************************************
Gauls break under the skill of the Roman swordsmen
at the leftmost fortification but the Nobles drive
off their enemies. The last intact unit of Roman
cavalry is beginning to lose its fight and the Gauls
commence to bypass it to move toward the rear of the
Roman center.
******************************************
End Game. The only Roman successes on the day push
toward the Gallic camp and manage to drive off a
second large group of barbarians. It is too little
and far too late though. Gallic cavalry is trying to
find a way into the fortified Roman camp without
success. The Gallic right flank finally managed to
catch hold of Roman slingers and the slaughter can
be seen at the top of the picture.
********************************************
The disrupted red caped Roman cavalry was, at the
moment that the Roman army broke, was about to break
off combat and be obliged to leave its flank exposed
to armoured Gallic cavalry. It really was the
infantry (and some luck) that allowed the Gauls to
win the cavalry battle on that flank.
